An Interview with Cathi Stoler
Hello and welcome Cathi! Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a native New Yorker who’s devoted much of my life to writing. For many years, I’ve been a Creative Director/Copywriter. Finally, realizing a life-long dream to write fiction, I wrote "Telling Lies", a full-length mystery suspense novel that takes on the subject of stolen Nazi art.
What genre(s) do you write?
I write mystery/suspense novels. I also write short stories in the same genre. One of my stories, "Out Of Luck", will be published in the Sisters in Crime Anthology, "Murder New York Style II",in 2011. Another short story, “Fatal Flaw,” will also be published online at “Beat To A Pulp” in April.
Camel Press will release your book, "Telling Lies". What is this story about? Where can readers find it?
It begins with a chance encounter at Florence’s Uffizi Museum, which plunges "Women Now" editor Laurel Imperiole and private investigator Helen McCorkendale into an investigation of missing persons and stolen Nazi art. Laurel's convinced that the man that she bumped was Jeff Sargasso, an art dealer and friend who supposedly perished in the World Trade Center on 9/11. As Laurel and Helen search for answers, they thread their way through a sinister—and possibly deadly—skein of lies.
The book will be released in April 2011 and will be available as an e-book, trade paper back and in hard cover through many venues, as well as on my website.
What kind of research do you do for your stories?
All of my stories have an element of events that are happening in the world in which we live. I look for interesting ideas in the news and think about how they would work in a re-imagined, fictionalized version. For example, "Telling Lies" revolves around looted Nazi art. This is a subject that’s been in the news quite often recently, as has the huge prices that works of art are commanding. For research, I spoke with FBI agents in the Art Crimes Squad as well as New York gallery owners. Since some of the story takes place in Florence, Italy, I did research on the art scene there and at the Uffizi Museum.
Please tell us about any previous or upcoming books so that readers who enjoy mystery/suspense novels can find them.
I’m working on my second novel, "Keeping Secrets", which reprises several of my main characters and delves into the subject of hidden identity, as well as a third novel in the series, "The Hard Way", a story about international diamond trafficking that takes place in Las Vegas. I’m also planning a new mystery series featuring four widowed New Yorkers. The first book is titled, "Widow's Walk".
