New York — April is proving to be a “killer” month for Cathi Stoler, with the debut of her first mystery/suspense novel, “Telling Lies,” (Camel Press, SBN: 978-1-60381-843-8) and her scheduled appearance at the renowned book convention, Malice Domestic.
Stoler, a native New Yorker and an award-winning advertising executive, realized a life-long dream to write fiction and began working in earnest on “Telling Lies,” which tells the story of stolen Nazi art, a man missing on 9/11 and a love affair gone awry.
The novel was selected as a finalist in the Brighid’s Fire Books Fiction Contest and is part of an ongoing series, including the next-in-line for release “Keeping Secrets,” which will reprise several of her main characters and delves into the subject of hidden identity, as well as “The Hard Way,” a story about international diamond trafficking, set in Las Vegas. Also due out on April 10th is Stoler’s short story, “Fatal Flaw,” which will be published on the online fiction site, www.beattoapulp.com.
Beginning with her love of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys series as a child, Stoler has been drawn to mysteries throughout her life. “With my own books, I’m striving to put in elements of what’s happening in the world today, contemporary issues, issues in the news. And of course, I bring in elements of my own life to my novels. I have a great passion for Italy and have studied Italian, which naturally figured into my setting ‘Telling Lies’ at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, among other locales.”
Clearly, Stoler is diving head-first into this new life as mystery author and what better welcome than an invitation to be a panelist at Malice Domestic, the 20+ year old annual convention dedicated to the traditional mystery — books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie.
To be held this year from April 29th though May 1st in Bethesda, MD, Stoler will join internationally lauded Sue Grafton and others, on the Malice panel entitled “Gumshoes with Gams: Female PIs on the Job.” Grafton, published in 28 countries and 26 languages, is also the recipient of Malice Domestic’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I am absolutely honored to be part of any panel that includes Sue Grafton,” added Stoler. Like Grafton, Stoler’s chief protagonists are women and Stoler takes much inspiration from her membership in the NYC chapter of Sisters in Crime as well as the “Women of Mystery,” blog where she regularly posts. Stoler also is a member of Mystery Writers of America.
